We live in a world of instant gratification. We want everything now! Money, weight loss, job...even our basic needs. It has made our society a mess where everything has to happen like it was yesterday! Unbelievable.
Can you imagine if our ancestors were the same way? Houses would be built in a day (shoddy quality), fields would be constantly harvested, losing all the valuable nutrients by over farming, and no one would have time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
In our modern technological world we've made everything so easy that we demand instant gratification on EVERYTHING. And when we don't get it we either give up or go into a decline either way due to frustration of not seeing the results right then and there.
Well, Rome wasn't built in a day and if it had been, I don't think it would have been as advanced as it was at the time.
Struggling with our need for perfection in everything, as soon as possible, has added to our stressful lifestyles. We are always on the go because society demands it of us. WE have the technology, we can be better, stronger, faster...yeah, I'm dating myself if those of you remember the opening lines to The Six Million Dollar Man...hey even he would have to have been even faster and stronger...just because our society demands it.
Well, I've decided on things to take their time. At least a few things concerning me personally. I've been trying to lose weight as talked about in the past post. I was hoping to drop five pounds in a week...well, I only dropped one. But I did drop one. And the proper way to lose weight is not instantly but gradually over a period of time. In the meantime it's learning to adapt eating properly and exercising daily. I've even learned that eating small healthy meals throughout the day is much more beneficial than not eating at all. It's amazing! Eating will help you lose weight...but it's eating the proper foods, not junk.
Will I be the weight I want to be for my cruise in less than three months? No, but I will be on my way and more controlled in my habits than I was last year. Even working out has become a daily obsession for me. It's all good and knowing I NEED to exercise every day, like I need to eat and sleep, is a good habit for keeping me strong and healthy, not necessarily slinky and sexy. (Those days are gone. But maybe fitting into one of those little black dresses without the help of Spanx to keep everything from bulging...I'll go for that.)
Weight isn't our only issue with instant gratification. We expect to be experts at our jobs and education on day one. Not going to happen. There is so much to learn about our everyday lives that we need to take time to learn from others, enjoy the process and know that one day, we will have the knowledge to guide others. It's a lifetime process. Instant success is fleeting (and can make us a bit prideful) but taking it slow and steady...we learn, we grow in the right direction, we make the mistakes and in the long run we reach the ultimate goals we've set before us...and tend to stay there.
So Cheers to taking it slow and steady...
